In late 2008 I decided I needed to get in better shape and started running again.  I ran my first formal road race ever, a half marathon, in late 2009.

(unofficial) Track 1 Mile - 7:32 (4/24/2010)  6:56 (9/27/2010)

5k - 27:31 - Riverview Run on 06/11/2010
22:39 - Gatorade Steelers 5k on 09/04/2010

10k - 50:43 - Riverside Run on 04/10/2010

Half - 2:02:58 - Just a Short Run on 03/27/2010
1:51:47 - IKEA Montour Trail Half on 09/11/2010

Short-Term Running Goals:

2011 Races:

Sept 25 - The Great Race 10k (59:15)
Nov 5 - Dirt Monster 5mi (52:59)

2012 Races:

June 8 - Riverside 5k  (27:49)
Sept 2 - Gatorade Steelers 5k (route) with Steve!  (27:39)
Sept 30 - The Great Race 10k (route)  (53:48)
Nov 3 - The Dirt Monster 5mi (52:55)

2013 Races:

May - Pittsburgh Marathon (started, but DNF about the half way point)
June - Riverview 5k  - Bummed I missed signing up for this one. It's one of my favorites!
Sept - Gatorade/Steelers 5k. (Signed up!)
Sept - IKEA Montour Trail Half  (prob not, but leaving it on here)
Sept - The Great Race 10k (My Running 101 goal race)
Nov - Dirt Monster 5mi (Gotta do it again no matter what!)

Long-Term Running Goals:

Finish recovering from my injuries and build mileage.  That is all.

Personal:

My name is Wes, I'm married with two wonderful children. The nickname BaldNSpicy came from the fact that I have been balding for a (long) while now and spicy for my love of very spicy foods (Thai and extremely hot wings are my favorites).  If eating doesn't bring me near tears and leave me sweating, it's not worth eating.  :-)

Oh, and I'm also known for my doorags.

It had been one of those days, plus I had rested the achilles for almost 3 weeks, so I decided to go do a few easy miles despite the persistent pain that hasn't left yet.  Walked the hills, very slowly jogged the flats going out. Coming back, I was still feeling the pain so I just walked the last 2 miles.  Did some easy stretches when I got back to the car, came home and took some Ibuprofen, am icing it now and will get off to bed.

I'll do some weight training tomorrow and avoid running for a day or two and see how it feels.  I'm really hoping to be in a position that I can run the race on the 27th (time doesn't matter, I just want to do it), but I don't know.  I may have to rest it completely until a couple days before when I do some slow miles and see how it feels.  I have to register by the 7th so I need to decide before then.

Wes, do you find the stretching at all painful? After your run, was the pain unchanged or worse?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Feb 03, 2010 at 19:12:58 from 71.21.119.111

Good to see you back on the blog, Wes. Injury setbacks are so frusturating. Hope it heals soon and lets you get back to running consistent miles for your race.

What is the race you want to do on the 27th?

From baldnspicy on Thu, Feb 04, 2010 at 13:58:12 from 72.95.175.57

Cara - yes, it hurts to stretch it, and it hurt more afterward, which is why I decided to walk back so I wouldn't hurt it worse.

Thanks for the encouragement, Joe. It always helps to know people are backing ya!

Burt - it was the "Spring Thaw" which is a 10mi race (2 laps around a lake), but then there are incentives for going another 1 or 2 laps. You get a nice long sleeved tech T for signing up, then at 15mi you get embroidered running gloves, and at 20mi you get an embroidered hat. My real purpose in running that was to race the 10mi for a time, then run the next 5 or maybe 10 at a slower pace. The longest I've run is the 13.1 for the Half last year, so I was looking forward to testing my endurance in a much longer long run. Most runners use this race as a jump off point to their marathon training for the year.

I'll post more later...gotta run. Not literally, of course! :-(

Hello fellow sleep deprived friend! Sorry to hear that you still have aches and pains, but I say if they are gone by the 27th, RUN! Who cares how fast or if you have to walk here and there????

From baldnspicy on Thu, Feb 04, 2010 at 21:48:41 from 72.95.175.57

Thanks Kelli. I have considered it and will continue to consider it. If I feel like I can run/walk it without causing any additional injury I may do it. But if there's even a hint of injury still there, it's off. If I'm feeling good at the end of this month and I don't do the 27th, I'll shoot for the Half. I'd love to do one of those, but in the interest of having a kick butt summer/fall, I'd rather skip the races now if I'm not 110%.

Amen.

I'm with ya on that, Wes!

Sorry I've been so silent on the blog lately. Life had been rather insane these 2 weeks, with no respite in sight for the next 2. Plus, my husband's going to Costa Rica on Valentine's Day for a week, so it just keeps getting BUSIER!

From Kelli on Thu, Feb 04, 2010 at 21:52:26 from 71.219.89.82

I agree, sounds like a very good and smart plan!

Thanks everyone! It's great to have people there to keep me motivated to get better.
